HAPPY NEW YEAR!

2009 REUNION

The fourth annual Charlie Company Reunion will again be held at the Hilton Cincinnati Airport on the weekend of June 12-13. The address is 7373 Turfway Road, Florence, KY 41042; phone number is 859-371-4400 and their web site URL is www.hiltoncincinnatiairport.com. Be sure to mention you’re with the Charlie Company Reunion when making reservations.

We have a block of 30 rooms reserved for the dates and the rate of $89 a night will be good three days before and three days after the reunion. The Hilton will honor this rate if we have more than 30 reservations as long as space is available. At the cut-off date, June 5, 2009, the Hilton will release any unreserved rooms for general sale. Any reservation received after the cut-off date will be accepted on a space and rate available basis.

We will keep our last reunion’s agenda: golf, ladies brunch at the tearoom, meals Friday and Saturday evenings at the Hilton, refreshments and memorabilia in the hospitality room and a business meeting. There will be more about the agenda in the next newsletter.

CONTACTS

The following are all of the contacts we have of Charlie Company vets. We wanted to publish this list in case you wanted to look for someone or to tell us you know someone we don’t have. We realize the list would be better if we had a picture and especially a nickname since you could read some of your best friends names and not recognize them! The names in bold are those who have been to a reunion.

CHARLIE COMPANY IN AFGHANISTAN

Carl McClafferty

People ask why, after serving in Viet Nam and a thirty-one year career in the US Border Patrol, I’m working in Afghanistan in areas where ISAF is not known to frequent. “Adventure?”, No, had plenty of that; “money?”, no, got a good retirement; “want to get out of the house?”, no, love my wife, children and grandchildren. It seems hard for people today to understand that sometimes you do things, even in miserable and uncomfortable conditions, because it’s the right thing to do. Probably our fault for spoiling our children and grandchildren, but I can’t help it!

My job here is training Afghan Border Police, a job near and dear to my heart. We don’t train them in comfortable RTCs (Regional Training Centers) nor secure bases. Eight of us go where they are and spend numerous weeks improving their survival and operational skills. We eat, sleep and perform daily functions in the same area as they do.

Watching 100 to 500 young Afghan Border Police start training with little skills and turn into a well armed, well trained, confident group is well worth the effort we put into it. We expatriates know that for everyone of the Afghans that will take a position defending their own Border Area, there is one less young American required to defend it.

Having spent 8 months here so far and training the ABP in every border region, it’s hard to go anywhere without having an ABP soldier yelling “Instructor Carl” and inviting me to drink Chai.

Am I proud of the work we do here? Yep! Is it worth the effort? You bet!

Editor’s note: Carl is getting SHORT! He is expecting to return home January 24th.
